September 24, 2011-Robert de Frece - Frameworks for Improvisation
In his writing and speeches, Carl Orff made it plain that improvisation and creation of music by children was at the heart of the philosophy of his Schulwerk. Many teachers who use the Orff approach seem to forget this philosophical heritage, however, and teach everything through imitation, leaving no opportunity for the children to improvise and create. Because the whole area of “creating” is part of the National Standards in Music Education it is important that we offer children opportunities to express themselves through rhythmic and melodic improvisation. This workshop will explore some frameworks for improvisation by children, offering them the opportunity to express themselves musically within well-defined structures that will result in musical outcomes.
