President’s Message – Winter, 2009
Dear Members and Colleagues,
Welcome to a new year—and the continuation of the Northern New Jersey Orff Schulwerk Workshop series for 2010!
I hope that your school holiday programs were a great success and that you also found time to enjoy this special season of the year with your families and friends. I even had the chance to serve as accompanist for a school holiday program, as well as provide music for a large number of church services!
The fall of 2009 was a great success as our chapter hosted both Vivian Murray-Caputo and Cyndee Geibler as their shared their wonderful ideas with all of us. We welcomed many new members to the chapter, in particular many first year music educators who had experienced the joy of the Schulwerk when they first visited our chapter as students. The chapter also welcomed a large number of students from William Paterson University who were in attendance at our fall workshops, and we look forward to having other students from Caldwell College join us in the spring.
A special thanks to our chapter members who attended the AOSA National Professional Development Conference in Milwaukee this past November and then came back ready to share the best of the conference with all of us. Bravo!
The Saturday morning schedule of workshops, presenters and detailed description for the spring of 2010 can be found on the chapter website (www.nnjosa.org). Please visit it often for updates on chapter happenings and for any cancellations of workshops due to the winter weather.
I look forward to seeing you for our workshops this spring. We begin on February 6th with our annual Chapter Sharing Workshop. As you may know from past sessions, our members are a very talented group of music professionals—so the best of their teaching experiences, shared with us, is always something special.
March 6th brings Steve Calantropio back “home” to our chapter for what will be a spectacular workshop. Steve will share with us his unique vision of possibilities within the Schulwerk—and a great wealth of knowledge from his over 30 years of teaching. His many fine presentations at numerous AOSA National Conferences and other international conferences are well known. An honored graduate of the WPU Music Department, we look forward to his challenging us with a wealth of new ideas and perspectives on the many faces of Orff-Schulwerk.
Our workshop series concludes on April 10th with a 6 hour presentation by Doug Goodkin who comes to us from San Francisco, CA. A nationally and internationally recognized Schulwerk expert, teacher and jazz musician, Doug will share with us his expertise as he brings to life the many possibilities of improvisation within the Schulwerk. What a way to end our year!!
As you can see, the spring is full of terrific professional development opportunities for our chapter members. Planning is already well underway for the 2010-2011 year and pre-registration will take place at our April workshop.
Get ready for a terrific spring! See you on February 6th!
Thomas R. Charsky, President

February 6, 2010 - Chapter Sharing Do you have/want to share a stellar lesson with others? Here is where our own gifted and talented members share their proven lessons. You each have a great lesson in your back pocket. Contact Judy Szybist to schedule your time.
March 6, 2010 - Steve Calantropio The Schulwerk approach of Carl Orff and Gunild Keetman, now almost 80 years old, still offers modern students many different avenues with which to enter the realm of music study. Exciting source materials combined with effective process teaching techniques can provide every student in an Orff classroom with some measure of success. This workshop will explore some of the traditional and nontraditional inspirations and modalities for the exploration of elemental music. Please bring soprano recorders to the session.
April 10, 2010 - Doug Goodkin (Note Time: 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.) Improvisation is at the core of the Orff approach. This workshop will explore a wide range of media in which children can improvise-speech, song, body percussion, movement, dance, drama, percussion instruments, recorder and Orff instruments-and a wide variety of musical styles-classic Orff elemental orchestrations, Medieval and Renaissance music, calypso, Ghanaian xylophone, jazz and more. Following the idea that “nothing requires more meticulous preparation than an exercise in improvisation” (Wilhelm Keller), each activity will focus on the details that evoke comfort and create clarity in improvisation. Material will cover ages from 3-14.
All workshops are held at: William Paterson University, Shea Center for Performing Arts, Recital Room 101, 300 Pompton Road, Wayne, New Jersey Click here for directions.
